Orange Calcite in The Morning Light

Calcite is one of those minerals that have been in use for such a long time that it is difficult to pinpoint when and where it was first discovered. The best I can do is to say that Ancient cultures like the Egyptians loved the various colors of Calcite for jewelry as well as other uses. It’s soft 3 on the Mohs scale makes it very workable. It also makes it easy to damage but this hasn’t stopped anyone for a very long time. Pliny the Elder wrote about Calcite in 79 BCE. Another interesting fact about Calcite is that if you let it cook in the earth longer it becomes marble if the conditions are right.  

This Limestone based mineral is found in many colors but today we’re talking about Orange Calcite. Like others in the family, Orange Calcite can range from clear to opaque. It can be found all over the world but some of the nicest is found in Mexico.
